Citizen science is at the heart of the NOUS Urban Sustainability and Innovation Hub. Through citizen science, NOUS brings together citizens, researchers, students, local authorities and community organisations to co-create knowledge and address real urban sustainability challenges. By turning everyday observations into useful data, shared insights and practical action, NOUS empowers residents to participate actively in shaping a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive urban future for Strovolos and the wider Nicosia area.

Citizen Science at NOUS

Empowering citizens to co-create knowledge for a sustainable Strovolos.

Citizen science is at the heart of NOUS. It connects residents, researchers, students and local stakeholders in the shared process of observing, questioning, testing and improving the urban environment.

Through citizen science, NOUS helps turn everyday observations into useful knowledge. Citizens can contribute to identifying local challenges, collecting data, discussing evidence and shaping solutions that support a more sustainable and resilient city.

How citizens can contribute

Citizens may contribute by joining workshops, participating in local mapping exercises, reporting observations, supporting environmental monitoring activities, proposing local challenges or working with researchers and community organisations.

Areas of possible activity include air quality, urban heat, biodiversity, mobility, walkability, waste reduction, energy behaviour and climate adaptation.

What is Citizen Science?

Citizen science involves the active participation of non-professionals in the scientific process. Citizens may help identify issues, co-design research activities, collect data, interpret findings or communicate results.

At NOUS, citizen science is understood as an inclusive, transparent and practical approach to research. It bridges scientific expertise with lived experience and helps ensure that local knowledge becomes part of urban decision-making.

Get involved

If you are a citizen, researcher, student, school, NGO, community group or local organisation interested in citizen science, NOUS can help you connect with relevant initiatives and partners.
